Thanks to Penn State

I’d like to that the students and economic faculty (especially Clair Smith) for hosting my recent visit to Penn State. I had an enjoyable visit.

Here are links to the audio and slides (pdf) of my Tuesday evening talk, “Is CC Sabathia Worth $160 Million?” If you have trouble with the audio, copy the audio address and paste it using the “Open URL” option.

Very interesting lecture, I enjoyed it. You should put the Q&A portion up on the website as well. The crowd you were talking to didn’t seem very responsive ;)

I have friends who have been whining about how “the Yankees are trying to buy another championship” again, however if you break it down, the Yankees really aren’t increasing their annual salary by that much, what with the players they’ve released and/or not resigned and whatnot.

    Thanks Michael,

There was a good Q&A session after the lecture. I did not want to include it without getting the permission of all who asked questions.

JC, does your calculation account for injury risk?  i.e. Is it a mean of a distribution that includes the possibility of injury leading to non-performance?  Or are the projections modal?

Thanks much.  I enjoy the site.

The estimates are based off performance during the previous three seasons. Players injured during this time will thus be valued less.
