Maybe Jones is just disappointed by how he has been hitting since the all-star break. AVG-OBP-SLG is .234-.356-.389.

JC, what do your aging curves predict for him for next year? Also, are there any other stats that correlate with BABIP, like HR%, for example?

Good post, JC. I am shocked (but probably should not be) by how many people have turned on this guy in recent years. I can understand the concern about his declining performance, but the vitriol and the attacks on his character says a lot about the human race.

Whether you are right or not about his recovering next year, I have no doubt that Chipper would quit if he thought he was hurting the team.

BABIP is not included in the estimation of PrOPS, but it provides some similar information regarding hitting luck. As PW points out, Chipper’s BABIP is down as well.

The THT glossary suggests it does. Anyway, Chipper’s BABIP this season is .287, compared to his career level of .317 and last year’s legendary .383. BABIP, too much playing time, aging, and a bit of a slump account for all of Chipper’s “struggles” this year. Mostly just BABIP.

Chipper needs rest and recuperation. I think his oblique problems are causing a power drop. Otherwise, he still knows the strikezone and hits well.

He does seem awfully sluggish and fumblefisted in the field. The last 2 years he had seemed to get some of it back, but now it is sliding.

I wish he would welcome and request an opportunity to go to 1st. That is the only way to justify his whole contract and gives the Braves time to fill the void (say, Prado at 3rd, Kj at 2nd or find a player to replace one of those positions if Infante is a free agent after this year as I think).
