How did Chamberlain get ahead of Price?
On Chamberlain, good question. When valuing relievers, I estimated the average added value of pitching in late innings where runs have more value. I explain the details of this correction in the book. While Joba pitched fewer innings than Price, his ability to pitch well when runs were more value gave him more estimated value for the season. Now, this doesn’t mean that I think Chamberlain is “more valuable” than Price as a pitcher overall. In the context of their careers, Price is the better pitcher whose contributions are likely to be more valuable going forward.
Matt Belisle?! How does a pitcher with an average ERA above 5 for the 2007-2009 seasons it to #5 on the list? I presume Brady Anderson’s meteoric, drug induced rise in ’96 would have had a similar effect on his value. Also, I’m surprised to see Aaron Harang missing from this list.
Ed, these are 2010 values.
